I have been meaning for sometime to report on patient case successes, as well as interesting occurrences in my clinic. This past Saturday is one that is worth sharing and will hopefully be the start of regular reporting on my behalf.
As many of you already know Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is a complex and phenomenal medical system that believes our energy connects and nourishes our entire body on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.
This past Saturday I was treating a middle-aged male with chronic neck and low back tension and pain. Over the past 7 days he was suffering from increased tightness and pain in his low back stronger than his regular low-mid range pain levels. Immediately after inserting bilateral needles at his L4 “lumbar” level he asked me what I did to his left hand? I responded I didn’t touch his left hand and he said the cramping and pain he had in his left hand for the past seven days immediately lifted and melted away. I proceeded to ask him if he had been suffering from constipation at all this week. He replied that for 2–3 days earlier in the week he had constipation but that the whole week was irregular. He asked me how I knew of his constipation. I replied that the large intestine meridian runs along the upper arm and forearm into the hand, and that the low back needles I inserted at L4 not only treat low back pain but related to the large intestine organ itself. He stated that his back was also relaxing but was completely amazed that his left hand stiffness, cramping and pain that lingered for a week had immediately lifted as if a switch had been flicked.
This is a fantastic example of the interconnectedness of our bodies and the deep levels of the TCM energy system. When a patients back is needled the needle affects, not only, the surrounding musculature, but also the organ beneath at the corresponding level of the spine, which in turn stimulates the flow of energy in the associated organ and the connected meridian, and also affects the emotions related to the organ needled.
The emotion of the large intestine has to do with grief and sadness and the function of letting go or the inability to let go. This patient has also been under stress recently with an inability to process and let go/resolve certain personal issues.
When he returns I’ll be sure to follow up on how his low back, hand cramps, constipation, and the state of his overall emotional body had responded to treatment.
I hope you enjoyed this amazing Qi story of how TCM works in action in the human body!
